ADA Data Analysis Suggests More Than Half of Dental Patients Show Up High

With the medical use of marijuana now legal in 37 states and recreational use legal in 19 states plus the District of Columbia, it’s not surprising that the number of people using cannabis is on an upward tick. However, arriving at a dental appointment under the influence would seem unlikely, but not according to data analysis by the American Dental Association (ADA). A review of survey results showed that more than 50% of dental patients show up for treatment high. The information was gleaned from one survey of more than 550 dentists and a separate poll of over 1,000 consumers. According to the ADA, marijuana use impacts the provision of dental care due to factors such as the possible need for higher levels of anesthesia and effects on the ability to provide informed consent.
