
Combination of Tooth Loss and Diabetes Hastens Dementia
A new study from the New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing found an association between the presence of tooth loss and diabetes with dementia. Published in the Journal of Dental Research, the research used 12 years’ worth of data from the University of Michigan’s Health and Retirement Study to investigate the trajectory of cognitive decline among older adults with tooth loss (signifying poor oral health) and diabetes. Individuals who were edentulous and also had diabetes experienced the most significant and the fastest cognitive decline compared with those who maintained their dentition and did not have diabetes.
