NOVAMIN WILL DEBUT IN CONSUMER MARKET

A product designed to protect sensitive teeth and used or dispensed by oral health care professionals will become available over-the-counter for the first time in the United States as part of a co-branding deal between DENTSPLY International and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Novamin, developed in the mid-1990s by researchers at University of Maryland, will be marketed to consumers under the GlaxoSmithKline brand Nupro Sensodyne—Powered by Novamin.

Novamin has been available in the United States only in teeth cleaning and polishing products used or dispensed by dentists and dental hygienists. Over-the-counter products will become available to US consumers as early as summer, according to a statement issued by GSK and DENTSPLY during the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting last month. Another Novamin-containing product, Sensodyne Repair and Protect Toothpaste, is already available to consumers in Europe, and plans call for its release in at least 50 markets internationally.

Consumer access to these products outside the dental office is at least partially the result of GSK’s purchase of NovaMin Technology, Inc in 2010. Prior to being acquired by GSK, NovaMin Technology marketed products that contained Novamin as part of a licensing agreement with the University of Maryland.
