HIPAA Compliance Is Changing and Dental Practices Need to Prepare Now

Proposed updates to the HIPAA Security Rule could require stronger cybersecurity protections, more detailed documentation, and stricter protocols for dental practices.

Dental practices may soon face significant changes to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance requirements. The United States Department of Health and Human Services has proposed updates to the HIPAA Security Rule that represent the first major revision in more than two decades. While the final rule is not expected until 2027, practices that wait to address compliance gaps may face challenges meeting new expectations.

The proposed updates emphasize stronger cybersecurity protections, including mandatory vulnerability scanning, enhanced encryption standards, multifactor authentication, and more detailed incident response requirements. Although many of these measures reflect best practices that practices should already have in place, the proposed changes would make these safeguards more formal and comprehensive.

Dental practices should use this time to evaluate their current HIPAA programs. Key areas to review include completing a current security risk analysis, maintaining documented workforce training, updating practice-specific policies and procedures, ensuring business associate agreements are in place with all applicable vendors, and confirming that patient information is properly protected across all devices.
