New Program Uses Libraries to Expand Access to Dental Care
The University of Maryland is hosting a new nationwide effort to improve access to dental care for marginalized populations. The innovative program will use public libraries to reach those most in need. The Narratives and Medical Education (NAME) project will place predoctoral dental and dental hygiene students in six libraries located in California, Indiana, Iowa, and Maryland. The students will provide screening and patient education on oral health. The clinical students will be joined by English and creative writing students who will document the participants’ struggles with accessing dental care in an effort to inform the public of such issues.
